FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Feb. 06, 2019
Waikīkī – In a continued effort to offer up the very best in Hawaiian entertainment, Royal Hawaiian Center unveils its Hula Kahiko Ma Helumoa lineup for 2019. The impressive performance schedule features hālau hula (hula schools) that have competed at the annual Merrie Monarch Festival and showcase a variety of traditions unique to their own hālau.
“First debuted in 2010, Hula Kahiko Ma Helumoa is the only program of its kind, and we’re proud to share the hula traditions of talented local hālau hula with the Hawaiʻi community,” said Monte McComber, Cultural Director at Royal Hawaiian Center. “Hula kahiko is unique in that its oli and mele represent Hawaiʻi’s oldest form of literature, and we invite visitors and kamaʻāina alike to experience this ancient art form.”
Every Saturday, hula kahiko is showcased with a hālau hula and their 'ōlapa (dancers) performing traditional hula where drumming and chanting are the accompaniment. To follow is the 2019 Hula Kahiko Ma Helumoa lineup:
