FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jan. 04, 2019

Waikīkī – Lunar New Year descends upon Royal Hawaiian Center with cultural activities, live entertainment, special gifts with purchase, and lots of good luck! The free festivities kick off on Friday, January 25 in The Royal Grove and continue through early February, enchanting visitors and kamaʻaina alike with this annual cultural celebration.

“While many people associate Lunar New Year with Chinese culture, it’s actually a tradition with roots throughout Asia,” said Royal Hawaiian Center Vice President, General Manager Marleen Akau. “Today, Lunar New Year is an annual occasion for the people of Hawaiʻi to gather together and enjoy delicious food, fantastic festivals, good luck charms and more.”

The celebration reaches an exciting peak on Friday, February 5, Chinese New Year Day with a lion dance performance by the Lung Kong Physical Culture Club at 5 p.m. After weaving their way through The Royal Grove, the lions will dance through the Center and make stops at every participating Royal Hawaiian Center store and restaurant. From 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., the Center will offer its popular calligraphy demonstrations in The Royal Grove. At 4:45 p.m., Miss Chinatown 2019 and her court will also make an appearance in The Royal Grove, where they’ll be available for photo ops and a special meet-and-greet.

From January 25 through February 11, shoppers can also take advantage of a limited-time gift with purchase promotion. Redeem $500 or more in Royal Hawaiian Center receipts then pick up a lucky lai see red envelope at Helumoa Hale Guest Services. Each lai see envelope contains a lucky number that corresponds to a prize, including an exclusive Aloha tote bag, merchandise from participating merchants, specialty logo items, and Royal Hawaiian Center gift cards for $28, $88 and $168. Throughout the Lunar New Year period, shoppers can also take advantage of special dining offerings at P.F. Chang’s, Tim Ho Wan and Panda Express.
