ROYAL HAWAIIAN CENTER BRINGS GOOD LUCK TO SHOPPERS WITH FUKUBUKURO 2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dec. 09, 2019

Waikīkī – Royal Hawaiian Center is bringing luck and good fortune to shoppers in the New Year with its annual Fukubukuro promotion on Wednesday, January 1, 2020. The Japanese retail tradition is one that shoppers look forward to all year long, offering significant discounts on “lucky bags” sold for at least half of their retail value. This year features over 30 participating stores and restaurants, including Fighting Eel, Furla, kate spade new york, Leather Soul, LeSportsac, Salvatore Ferragamo, Tim Ho Wan, Tory Burch and more. The annual tradition begins at 9:30 a.m. in The Royal Grove with a taiko drum performance by Kenny Endo. Participating stores and restaurants will begin selling Fukubukuro bags at 10 a.m.

“Fukubukuro is a beloved annual tradition our shoppers look forward to all year long,” said Royal Hawaiian Center Vice President, General Manager Marleen Akau. “Every year, our participating stores and restaurants set aside some of their most valuable pieces just for Fukubukuro, making the lucky bags all the more special. We look forward to welcoming shoppers on the first day of 2020 for an unforgettable experience.”

Translated as “lucky bag” in Japanese, Fukubukuro began in a Tokyo department store in the early 20th century, and has since grown into one of the most popular New Year traditions in Hawaiʻi and Japan. The cultural tradition is inspired by the belief that people’s lucky bags reflect the good fortune they’ll enjoy in the new year. Every New Year’s Day, merchants sell their lucky bags for at least half of what they’re worth. The catch? The bag’s contents are kept secret until shoppers purchase them.

Royal Hawaiian Center’s Fukubukuro bags range from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars, depending on the merchant. No matter which stores they visit, shoppers will be treated to an item that’s worth at least twice as much as they paid for it. Previous Fukubukuro gifts include restaurant gift cards, handbags, beauty products, and jewelry.
