Waikīkī – On Sunday, November 24, 2019, Royal Hawaiian Center partners with PAʻI Foundation to host Hoʻolauleʻa at Helumoa, a unique arts market featuring native Hawaiian artists and cultural practitioners, live music, and a special hōʻike (showcase). Hoʻolauleʻa at Helumoa is the concluding event of I Leʻa Ka Hula, a week-long hula and cultural celebration hosted by PAʻI Foundation.
“Hawaiʻi is home to many hula traditions, and I Leʻa Ka Hula provides a rare space to showcase synergy among these traditions,” said Monte McComber, cultural director at Royal Hawaiian Center. “As Royal Hawaiian Center is closely connected to the Maiki Aiu Lake hula lineage from whom the festival’s organizers descended, it’s only fitting that we host the festival’s closing event.”
In addition to showcasing a variety of Hawaiian crafts, jewelry, and artwork by local artists and cultural practitioners, Hoʻolauleʻa at Helumoa will also feature a special “Kani Ka Pila” (play music) with some of Hawaiʻi’s finest musicians and hālau hula. The event will also include a hōʻike with performances by I Leʻa Ka Hula participants.
“The hula community, my hula brothers and sisters, and I are so excited for the first annual I Leʻa Ka Hula,” said Vicky Holt-Takamine, executive director of the PAʻI Foundation. “Mahalo to Royal Hawaiian Center for hosting our closing event—this is a can’t-miss event for anyone who appreciates the beautiful artform of hula.”
In collaboration with Nā Kumu Hula Vicky Holt-Takamine, Robert Uluwehi Cazimero and Michael Pili Pang, PAʻI Foundation hosts I Leʻa Ka Hula, a hula and cultural festival promoting the preservation and perpetuation of Hawaiian traditions. This festival is supported by Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA). For a complete schedule of events, visit paifoundation.regfox.com/i-lea-ka-hula.
