ROYAL HAWAIIAN CENTER UNVEILS NEW CULTURAL PROGRAMMING FOR 2020
Waikīkī – In celebration of its momentous 40th anniversary, Royal Hawaiian Center has revamped its complimentary cultural programming. Starting on February 15, 2020, the Center will now feature daily cultural activities, with new programs and expanded offerings of its popular classes under a new annual theme—Nā Kai ʻEwalu, translated as, “The Eight Seas.”
“We have imbued Hawaiian culture into our guests’ experience since we first opened our doors in 1980, and it’s only fitting that we pay tribute to our historic site by evolving our cultural offerings,” said Monte McComber, cultural director at Royal Hawaiian Center. “From new daily Hawaiʻi film screenings to the return of our moʻolelo (storytelling) series, our cultural programming honors our rich history and heritage. This year, each month will focus on a specific area of our overall theme, Nā Kai ʻEwalu, which will weave through the various lessons, as well as hula and musical performances.”
The renewed cultural programming includes, after a three-year hiatus, the return of Papa Moʻolelo (Storytelling) with Uncle Joe Recca on Mondays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Guests can also enjoy free daily screenings of films about Hawaiʻi from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Helumoa Hale.
In addition to new cultural programs, the Center will expand its existing offerings for visitors and kamaʻāina to enjoy. The Center’s Malu Niu Hawaiian evening entertainment will feature live hula performances from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. five days a week from Tuesdays through Saturdays in The Royal Grove, including the new Hula ‘Auana Ma Helumoa on Friday evenings and on Saturdays, Hula Kahiko Ma Helumoa with award-winning hālau hula showcasing their hula traditions and sacred dances set to traditional instruments, like the pahu (drum) and ipu (gourd).
In response to demand, an additional keiki hula class will also be offered with classes now on Mondays and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Royal Hawaiian Center will also continue to offer its other popular cultural programs throughout the week, including ‘ukulele lessons, Hawaiian quilting, lauhala weaving, adult hula classes, and lei making.
