Fukubukuro 2013 at Royal Hawaiian Center!

Traditional Japanese “lucky bag” retail event begins at 10 a.m.

WAIKĪKĪ – The popular Japanese tradition of Fukubukuro on New Year’s Day comes alive at Royal Hawaiian Center!  A lively performance by Kenny Endo’s Taiko Center of the Pacific will signal the kick-off of this annual event at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 1st.  Promptly at 10:00 a.m., shoppers can purchase Fukubukuro, or “lucky bags” full of mystery gifts, at 32 participating merchants and restaurants to receive great discounts.  Each Fukubukuro bag will contain products from the merchant and its contents will be revealed only after purchase. Red balloons at each store or restaurant will indicate participation.

“It’s always exciting to see what surprises you receive in the Fukubukuro bag,” said Marleen ‘Ākau, general manager of Royal Hawaiian Center.  “All of the mystery bags are filled with amazing discounts so we encourage everyone to experience the thrill of purchasing them and taking home a bit of luck to ring in the New Year.”

Participating retailers will fill grab bags with a variety of merchandise that will be sold at a 50 percent discount or more off its retail value.  Select restaurants will offer a limited number of gift cards ranging from $20 to $50 that can be purchased at up to 50 percent off.

Royal Hawaiian Center is open on New Year’s Day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.  The Fukubukuro shopping event specials are available while supplies last.
